The short version
The symptom check runs entirely in your browser. Your answers stay on your device unless you choose to give us your email address and ask for your summary.
If you do ask for it, we receive your email address and your answers — and your answers are health information, which gets stronger protection under Australian law.
What we collect
If you use the symptom check but do not enter your email
Nothing reaches us. The questions, your answers and the summary are all generated on your device. Your answers are saved in your browser's local storage so you can come back to them, and you can clear that at any time with "Start again". We cannot see any of it.
If you ask us to email your summary
We receive:
- Your email address
- Your symptom check answers and the summary generated from them
- A record of your consent — what you agreed to, and when
- The date and time of submission
Your symptom answers are health information, and therefore sensitive information under the Privacy Act 1988. We collect it only with your express consent, which is why there is a tick box rather than a pre-ticked one.
If you contact us
Whatever you put in your message, and your contact details.
Automatically
Standard web server logs — IP address, browser type, pages requested, timestamps — kept to run and secure the site. We do not use them to build a profile of you.
What we do with it
Your email address: to send you the summary you asked for, the appointment guide, and occasional related information. Every message has an unsubscribe link and it works.
Your symptom answers: to generate the summary we send you, and in aggregate to understand which symptoms bring people here so we can write about them. Aggregate means counted, not read individually alongside your name.
We do not sell, rent or trade your information. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not use it to target you with advertising anywhere else.
Who else sees it
Our email provider, which stores your address and delivers messages to you. [Name the provider and its location before launch.]
Our hosting provider, which processes server logs.
Some providers store data outside Australia. Where that is the case we will name the country here, because you are entitled to know.
We disclose information otherwise only where the law requires it, or with your express consent.
Cookies and tracking
This site sets no advertising or analytics cookies. There is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to.
The symptom check uses your browser's local storage to remember your answers. That is on your device, not ours.
If we add analytics later, this page will be updated before it goes live, and we will use a configuration that does not track you across other sites.
Fonts
We load typefaces from Google Fonts. Your browser requests them from Google, which receives your IP address as part of that request, under Google's privacy policy. We can self-host these instead — tell us it matters to you and we will.
Keeping it
We keep your email address until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.
We keep symptom check submissions for no longer than we need them, and we will state a specific period here once one is set. Ask us to delete yours and we will.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS. Access to submitted information is limited to people who need it. No system is perfect, and we will not pretend otherwise — if a breach occurs that is likely to cause you serious harm, we are required to notify you and the OAIC, and we will.
Your rights
Under the Australian Privacy Principles you may:
- Ask what we hold about you
- Ask us to correct it if it is wrong
- Ask us to delete it
- Withdraw consent at any time, including by unsubscribing
- Complain if you think we have mishandled it
Write to [email address]. We respond within 30 days.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can take it to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Children
This site is written for adults and is not directed at children.
Changes
Material changes are posted here with a new date. If a change affects how we use information you have already given us, we will tell you directly rather than quietly updating this page.
